The Council of the European Union may approve a new package of sanctions against Russia as early as next week in response to the latest massive strikes on Ukraine.
This is reported by “European Truth” with reference to sources in the EU.
According to the publication’s interlocutors, the issue of additional restrictions is planned to be considered on July 13 during a meeting of the EU Council on Foreign Affairs.
The new sanctions were proposed after another large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, including a massive shelling of Kyiv. According to sources, the initiative received broad support among European Union member states.
The day before, the EU Permanent Representatives Committee discussed the proposed measures and referred them for further consideration to the Working Party of Foreign Affairs Counsellors (RELEX), which is to prepare the decision for final approval.
As a reminder, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, stated that she would propose to EU countries to introduce new sanctions against Russia after the massive attack on Kyiv on the night of July 2.
As previously reported, the European Union has extended economic sanctions against Russia for another year. They will be in effect until at least July 31, 2027.
