EU plans to impose additional restrictions against Belarus: details of new sanctions package
The European Commission proposes to impose additional sanctions on Belarus and apply restrictions on software used by Russian banks.
This was reported by “European Truth” with reference to diplomats of key EU states.
It is noted that on Monday, June 16, the European Commission presented amendments to the new 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia. The updated draft will be prepared by the end of the week.
As the publication’s interlocutor emphasized, other amendments are also expected and will be presented soon.
According to another official, it is proposed to add strengthening measures that limit potential circumvention of sanctions, restrictions on the movement of Russian diplomats in the European Union, and sanctions on the activities of Russian companies in the cryptocurrency market.
“Coreper (the Permanent Representatives Committee – ed.) will return to discussing the 18th package later this week. It feels like member states are close to a compromise. However, there is still a huge amount of work to do, especially at a technical level – so it is unlikely that sanctions will be approved this week,” he explained.
As a reminder, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot expressed hope that the European Commission will present the 18th package of sanctions against Russia by the end of June.
By the way, the European Union is considering the possibility of disconnecting more than 20 Russian banks from the international SWIFT system as part of a new package of sanctions against Russia.
It was previously reported that the 18th package of sanctions from the EU will include companies from China, the UAE, and Hong Kong .
It is worth noting that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that his country would block any European Union sanctions against Russia if they threatened national interests.
