Ambassadors of the European Union countries have agreed on the largest expansion of the sanctions list against Russia – they plan to add 743 individuals and 826 companies related to the Russian military-industrial complex to it.

This was reported by Radio Liberty. The information was also confirmed by the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tykhyi.

EU ambassadors agreed on the decision on October 7. According to Tykhy, it is currently preliminary and paves the way for final approval of sanctions next week.

In total, the agreed list includes 1,569 positions . The initial draft included 744 individuals and 827 companies, but the final version included one individual and one legal entity less. It is currently unknown who exactly was removed.

All 826 companies on the list are part of the Russian government’s list of military-industrial complex enterprises, some of which receive state support.

Individuals were included in the list mainly because they manage such enterprises. The European Union believes that in this way they contribute to the work of the Russian military-industrial complex.

Among the enterprises whose leaders were included in the draft sanctions are manufacturers of missile systems, warships and submarines, aviation equipment, electronics, and other defense products.

In particular, the documents mention the heads of the Mechanical Engineering Design Bureau, Sevmash, the Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering Rubin, Malachite, Admiralty Shipyards, and the Zvezdochka ship repair center.

Separately, EU ambassadors agreed on sanctions against 77 people whom Russia declared elected to the State Duma from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

The European Union has also extended its sanctions regime related to the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. It currently imposes restrictions on 31 individuals and six organizations .

Once the formal procedure is completed and the decisions are published in the Official Journal of the EU, the new sanctions will include an asset freeze and a ban on providing funds or other economic resources to the sanctioned individuals and companies. For individuals, there will also be a ban on entry into and transit through the EU.

As a reminder, today it was reported that EU ambassadors approved over 1,500 new sanctions positions . The new data specifies the composition of the list and the categories of enterprises and managers that will be covered by the restrictions.

Also today, the EU is preparing to remove two Russian businessmen from the sanctions list .
