The European Union is preparing a new package of sanctions, which could include restrictions on four Chinese companies that, according to European officials, help Russia circumvent sanctions and support its military logistics.
This is reported by Politico.
According to EU representatives, these companies may be involved in supplying chemicals to the Russian army, components for the production of strike drones, as well as supporting the so-called “shadow fleet” used to circumvent oil restrictions.
“These structures directly or indirectly support Russia’s military capabilities,” European officials quoted by Politico note.
Brussels acknowledges that such a move could strain relations with Beijing. China has already warned that in the event of new restrictions from the EU, it may resort to “strong countermeasures” to protect its interests.
These sanctions are expected to be part of a separate “mini-package” to be adopted on June 15 at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg. In parallel, the European Union is preparing a broader 21st sanctions package, which could be adopted later this summer.
In addition to Chinese companies, the list may also include enterprises from the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Azerbaijan, which, according to the EU, facilitate Russian maritime transportation and energy trade.
The names of the companies are not being disclosed at this time.
