The European Union has outlined its position on upcoming US-Russia talks to end the war in Ukraine. Any agreements, the European side said, should not allow Russia to avoid responsibility for war crimes.
This is reported by Politico .
European Commissioner for Justice and Democracy Michael McGrath warned that US President Donald Trump’s pursuit of a peaceful settlement should not lead to impunity for the Russian leadership and its military, effectively setting a new “red line” for the terms of any possible agreement.
According to journalists, there is widespread concern in European capitals about the initial approaches of the American side, which allegedly provided for a full amnesty for actions committed during the war, as well as the resumption of economic cooperation with Russia.
Donald Trump’s team, according to a source, is insisting on the gradual rehabilitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin despite international condemnation and numerous accusations of war crimes. Among them are the abduction of 20,000 Ukrainian children and the killing of civilians in Bucha, Mariupol and other cities in Ukraine.
“I don’t think history will judge any attempts to ‘wipe out’ Russian crimes in Ukraine kindly. They must be held accountable for what they have done, and that is the approach the European Union will take during the negotiations,” said Michael McGrath.
“If we allow impunity for these crimes, we will sow the seeds for the next invasion. And I believe that will be a historic mistake of enormous proportions,” he added.
According to Ukrainian law enforcement, more than 178,000 cases of crimes committed by Russia have been investigated since the start of the full-scale war. A United Nations commission has also established facts of crimes against humanity committed during attacks on civilians using drones and as a result of forced deportations.
“We cannot give up the rights of the victims of Russian aggression and Russian crimes. Millions of lives have been destroyed or lost, people have been forcibly deported, we have enough evidence,” said Michael McGrath.
The European Union, together with other international organizations, is working to create a special tribunal to try crimes of aggression and hold the Russian leadership accountable for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022.
In March 2023, judges at the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, finding him responsible for the war crime of the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.
At the same time, as journalists note, Donald Trump publicly demonstrates no interest in bringing him to justice and continues to state the possibility of establishing cooperation between the United States and Russia in the economic and energy sectors.
By the way, European countries are preparing for a possible invasion by Russia without US participation, amid the reduction of the American military presence on the continent. NATO countries in Europe are already adapting defense plans and strengthening their own military capabilities.
Recall that a meeting of senior US officials and a Ukrainian delegation was held in Hallandale Beach, Florida, aimed at discussing the end of the war in Ukraine . The talks were characterized as tough but constructive and covering the most sensitive issues.
