Ukraine will allocate 2.5 billion euros from the European Union’s loan funds to purchase 16 Swedish Gripen E fighters.
This is reported by “European Pravda” with reference to its own sources and spokespeople for the European Commission.
On July 30, the European Union transferred 3.47 billion euros to Ukraine as part of the “defense payments” mechanism, which is financed by a 90 billion euro loan program.
As the publication notes, 2.5 billion euros of this amount will go towards the purchase of 16 Swedish-made Gripen E multi-role fighters.
The European Commission officially confirmed that Ukraine will use part of the funds to purchase Gripen aircraft. However, European Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari did not specify the number of fighters and the amount of the contract.
According to sources of “European Truth”, this concerns the purchase of 16 aircraft for 2.5 billion euros.
The publication also reminds that the production of new fighters takes time. Therefore, in 2026, Sweden will transfer to Ukraine free of charge the aircraft of the previous modification, which are currently in service with its air force.
Ukraine expects to receive the first new Gripen E in 2027.
As we will recall, Saab CEO Mikael Johansson previously stated that an agreement to supply Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighters to Ukraine could be concluded in the coming months. The deal involves the possible supply of 100 to 150 aircraft as part of cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden in the defense sector.
