Europe is building up its defenses amid the Russian threat: what is still missing?

The European Union is increasing defense spending, but so far it is not doing so fast enough to reach the required level of readiness by 2030. The EU warns that in the event of a further deterioration in the security situation, the bloc’s countries need to significantly accelerate rearmament.

This is stated in the first annual report of the European Defense Agency on defense readiness, cited by Reuters.

The authors of the document point to problems in several key areas at once, including air and missile defense, ground forces, naval forces, ammunition stocks, and unmanned systems.

“To achieve defense readiness by 2030 in the face of a complex and deteriorating security situation, as well as the threat posed by Russian aggression, it is necessary to act more decisively and significantly faster than is currently the case,” the report states.

At the same time, the EU acknowledges that the bloc’s countries have already increased defense spending and begun to more actively build up military capabilities. This is facilitated, in particular, by closer cooperation with Ukraine.

However, the increase in funding alone is not enough. According to the European Defence Agency, the new investments have not yet translated into forces that have the necessary mobility, resilience and ability to act effectively together.

“The results achieved so far, although unprecedented, are still insufficient,” the document states.

The report is expected to be discussed by EU defense ministers in Brussels in the coming days, after which it will be presented to EU leaders.
