European countries are considering the possibility of creating a new security alliance without the participation of the United States, in which Ukraine could play one of the key roles.

This is reported by Politico.

The newspaper said the discussions were prompted by statements by US President Donald Trump, including his threat to impose punitive tariffs on anyone who tried to thwart US plans for Greenland. This was seen in Europe as a signal that the Western security system needed to be rethought.

Politico notes that an effective format for cooperation without Washington’s participation already exists in Europe – the so-called “coalition of the willing.” It includes both EU countries and states outside the Union, in particular the United Kingdom and Norway. National security advisers from about 35 governments maintain regular contact, coordinating positions and developing joint solutions.

Within this group, European leaders have developed a mechanism for rapid communication in the event of US moves they consider potentially dangerous. According to Politico sources, the level of trust between the coalition members remains high.

Ukraine plays a special role in this format. As the publication notes, it was Ukraine’s support that became the starting point for the formation of the “coalition of the willing.” The Ukrainian state participates in regular contacts between the group’s leaders, which further strengthens the interaction between European capitals.

Politico notes that Ukraine is now one of the most militarized countries in Europe, with a large army, a powerful drone industry, and unique combat experience. Combined with the military potential of France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom, such an alliance could become a large-scale force that unites both nuclear and non-nuclear states.

It was previously reported that ambassadors of the European Union countries plan to approve the 20th package of sanctions against Russia on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Recall that during the European Union summit, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz did not receive French support for using frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.
