Germany has announced its intention to become Europe’s strongest conventional army within NATO amid the changing security situation following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Berlin also plans to significantly increase defense spending and the size of the Bundeswehr.
This is reported by Fox News Digital .
German Ambassador to the United States Jens Ganefeld said the country is ready to take on greater responsibility for European security after decades in which the United States carried a significant portion of the military burden in NATO.
According to him, the new military strategy involves transforming the Bundeswehr into the strongest conventional army in Europe.
“Russia’s illegal aggressive war has shaken old perceptions in Europe and Germany, as the international rules we have relied on are being called into question. This is changing the strategic environment in which we operate,” said Jens Ganefeld.
He stressed that Germany’s decision to become the strongest conventional army in Europe, firmly integrated into NATO, is a long-term commitment.
According to the publication, these statements came against the backdrop of public disagreements between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on a number of international issues.
Retired Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery positively assessed Berlin’s plans for developing the defense sector.
“Germany’s development of a large, impressive defense-industrial base is good for NATO, it’s good for Western security,” said Mark Montgomery.
According to him, it is Germany that has the greatest chance of becoming the basis of Europe’s future defense-industrial base.
The ambassador also recalled Germany’s key role in the US military presence in Europe, in particular through Ramstein Air Base, Landstuhl Medical Center, and Grafenwoehr Training Area.
At the NATO summit in The Hague, the allies agreed to allocate 5% of GDP to defense and related spending by 2035. According to Hanefeld, Germany plans to achieve this figure much earlier and increase the size of the Bundeswehr by almost 100,000 troops.
One of Berlin’s key projects is the deployment of a permanent brigade in Lithuania. It is expected to include around 5,000 German military and civilian specialists.
“NATO will remain transatlantic in nature, but over the next decade it will become more European,” said Jens Ganefeld.
By the way, NATO’s rapid reaction force has deployed an underground headquarters at London’s Charing Cross Underground station to conduct exercises simulating a “deep strike” operation against Russia . During the exercises, the military practiced the use of electronic warfare and countering Russian drones.
Recall that Germany is modernizing Europe’s largest car port in Bremerhaven to transport military equipment and prepare logistics in case of a potential military conflict in Europe. The port is planned to be reconstructed with 1.35 billion euros, and the facility will be adapted to transport Leopard heavy tanks.
It was previously reported that the Kremlin is actively building the psychological and informational foundation for a possible future war against NATO. At the same time, Russia is creating a network of “Trojan horses” , buying up real estate near military bases of NATO countries, to launch a coordinated sabotage campaign. The Kremlin has also intensified its propaganda campaign regarding the creation of the “Narva People’s Republic” , which may indicate that the Kremlin is preparing to attack Estonia.
