The European Union may introduce new restrictions against Russian military personnel who participated in the war against Ukraine. The proposal has been included in the draft of the 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia.

This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on June 9 during a speech in Brussels, European Truth reports.

According to her, the European Commission is proposing for the first time to introduce a ban on entry into the European Union countries for persons who served in the Russian armed forces after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“We are proposing for the first time to ban entry to the European Union to anyone who has served in the Russian armed forces since the start of the war,” von der Leyen said.

The President of the European Commission emphasized that Europe must remain closed to those who were involved in the aggression against Ukraine.

“Europe will remain closed to all those who participated in the invasion of Ukraine,” she emphasized.

The initiative is part of a new sanctions package that EU countries have yet to agree on. It is expected to be aimed at increasing pressure on Russia and those supporting or directly participating in the war against Ukraine.

If the new restrictions are approved, former and current Russian military personnel may lose the ability to enter the territory of European Union member states, regardless of the purpose of the trip.

As a reminder, the European Union is preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia. This time , the energy sector, banks, cryptocurrency services, trade, and even the fishing industry may be subject to restrictions.
