European Union Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas stated that Russia’s use of the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile against Ukraine is yet another escalation of the war and a warning signal to Europe and the United States. Moldovan President Maia Sandu, for her part, described the strike as an act of intimidation.

The politician made the corresponding statements on social media.

Kallas emphasized that the use of such a missile demonstrates the Kremlin’s intention to increase pressure not only on Ukraine but also on its Western partners. She called on EU countries to urgently intensify efforts to strengthen their air defenses and fulfill their obligations, as well as to increase the cost of the war for Moscow, including through increased sanctions.

According to Kallas, Vladimir Putin is not interested in peace, and Russia’s response to diplomatic initiatives is more missile strikes and destruction.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu also strongly condemned the attack. She stated that the strike was an act of terror aimed at intimidating Ukraine and its partners, emphasizing that the war was drawing ever closer to Europe, posing a threat to everyone. Sandu assured Moldova’s solidarity with Ukraine.

As a reminder, on the night of January 9, the Lviv region suffered a missile strike , which damaged a critical infrastructure facility. Following the attack, fires and gas supply disruptions were reported in some areas of the region. Video footage subsequently surfaced online of the probable moment of impact and the aftermath of the strike, attributed to the use of a Russian Oreshnik ballistic missile.

Meanwhile, Russian government sources claimed the strike was carried out by an Oreshnik ballistic missile in “response” to the alleged attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence. Official Ukrainian sources have not yet confirmed the use of this type of missile.

In response, Ukraine will appeal to its international partners to demand an immediate response to Russia’s use of a medium-range ballistic missile against the Lviv region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the Kremlin claims it used an Oreshnik-type missile, and Moscow’s attempts to justify the attack with a fictitious “attack on Putin’s residence” are yet another example of lies and propaganda.
