The European Commission has confirmed that the REPowerEU Regulation, which bans imports of Russian gas, will come into force from 2027, despite a legal action by Hungary, which is trying to challenge the document.
This was stated by the chief spokeswoman of the European Commission, Paula Pinho, reports European Truth.
“We will apply this regulation, and it is worth remembering,” Pinho emphasized.
EC Energy Spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen added that the commission is now awaiting instructions from the Court of Justice of the EU on further steps in Hungary’s lawsuit.
“In all cases considered by the Court of Justice of the EU, it is the Court that determines the procedure, schedule, and further development of the case. We will act in accordance with their decisions,” Itkonen explained.
At the same time, she assured that the European Commission is ready to defend its position in court and will implement the court’s decision in the prescribed manner.
As a reminder, on January 26, the EU Council adopted a decision to phase out imports of Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas . The document defines the terms of the ban, supply control, and requirements for EU countries to replace Russian energy carriers.
As reported, the European Commission plans to propose to EU member states to abandon purchases of Russian oil by the end of 2026.
