MEPs unanimously condemned the threats from Russia, saying that it was necessary to coordinate measures to protect the airspace and critical infrastructure of member states. The adopted resolution insists on a tough policy against actions that undermine the security of the EU and its allies.
The European Parliament announced this on October 9.
469 deputies voted for the document, 97 voted against, and another 38 abstained.
The text of the resolution contains a harsh assessment of recent incidents: violations of airspace over Poland, the Baltic countries, and Romania, as well as deliberate drone attacks on infrastructure in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.
Key provisions of the resolution:
- Recognize Russia’s actions, including sabotage and hybrid operations, as posing a threat to the security of the EU. In essence, equate them with state terrorism.
- Achieve coordinated deterrence. This involves strengthening defense cooperation between EU countries and with Ukraine, especially on drone technology and countermeasures.
- To tighten the sanctions policy against Moscow and expand punitive measures to complicit states (in particular, Belarus, Iran, North Korea) and to companies supplying dual-use goods (the risks of the participation of a number of Chinese firms are noted).
- Accelerate work on creating a single EU defense mechanism and improve civil-military coordination on airspace control.
- Support initiatives such as the concept of a “drone wall” as one of the elements of protecting the Union’s eastern border.
MEPs stressed that the EU must send a clear signal: any actions that infringe on the sovereignty of member states will not go unanswered. The resolution calls on the executive and national governments to agree on practical steps to implement these ideas in the short term.
Recall that earlier, one of the largest manufacturers of air defense systems in Europe reported an increase in the number of unknown drones over its secret facilities.
Earlier , in Norway, an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle was recorded flying over one of the strategic facilities – the Equinor gas field located in the North Sea.
As reported, flights of unidentified drones were recorded in Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania, Norway and Finland , some of which flew near military facilities and strategic infrastructure.
