European Solidarity publicly responded to Sadovy regarding his appeal to Poroshenko

The Sokilnytsia organization of the European Solidarity Political Party provided a public response to Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy regarding his appeal to Petro Poroshenko.

“Mr. Andriy. We have carefully read your appeal to Petro Poroshenko regarding the future of Sokilnyky and Lviv Airport. We definitely agree with you on one thing: this is really about what kind of country we will leave behind. That is why we should speak not with slogans, but with facts,” the message said.

It is noted that the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv International Airport is a strategic facility for the Lviv region and all of Ukraine.

“And the Sokilnytsia community not only understands this, but also did something that you for some reason did not mention in your appeal. The Sokilnytsia community, the Lviv Regional Military Administration, and the Lviv International Airport itself signed a memorandum of cooperation and further development of the airport. A territory for a future cargo terminal is provided for the development of the airport. Relevant aviation restrictions are being determined. The airport itself then asked the court to leave its lawsuit regarding the Sokilnytsia general plan without consideration, since the parties have moved on to agreeing on the future development of the airport,” the statement added.

Eurosolidarity added that this is exactly how a European country should work: not through public ultimatums from one community to another, but through agreements, the law, and the search for common interest.

“There is another principle that is no less important for us: Sokilnyky is not the territory of Lviv. It is a separate territorial community. The people who live here elect their government, pay taxes, and have the same right to determine the future of their community as Lviv residents do — the future of Lviv. Decentralization was carried out precisely for this reason: so that decisions about the development of communities are not made for them by stronger neighbors,” the report noted.

European Solidarity emphasized that it respects the right of Lviv to think about its own development and expects the same respect for Sokilnyky.

“It is all the more surprising to hear today calls to intervene in the decisions of a neighboring community from the mayor, who knows well the price of self-government and has repeatedly demanded that the central government not interfere in the affairs of Lviv. The rules are either the same for everyone, or they are no longer rules. We also remember well the story of the reconstruction of the Roman Shukhevych Museum destroyed by the Russians. Then the Petro Poroshenko Foundation offered to finance its restoration, but Lviv chose a different path. We did not agree with this decision. It was Lviv’s decision,” the statement said.

The party noted that this is exactly how local government works.

“Therefore, today it is inappropriate to turn the development of two neighboring communities into another political war. The airport must develop. Sokolnyky must develop. Lviv must develop. And these three sentences do not contradict each other,” the message added.

“Eurosolidarity” notes that roads, transport interchanges, schools, kindergartens, sewage treatment plants and waste processing plants are needed. A cargo terminal and a reserve of territories for the future development of the airport are needed. Aviation, environmental and urban planning restrictions must be observed. And respect for people living on both sides of the administrative border is needed.

“Because this is really not just about building. It’s about what kind of country we will leave behind. We would like to leave a country in which the law is more important than the political influence and business interests of individual officials. In which a large community does not dictate to a smaller one how to live. And in which agreements between the community, regional authorities, and the state airport weigh more than a noisy post on social networks. This is exactly the country we want to leave behind,” the message says.

As a reminder, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi today published a strange appeal to the leader of the EU party, Petro Poroshenko.

“On September 29, the Lviv District Council may consider an issue that will open the way to large-scale residential development in the village of Sokilnyky, close to the Lviv airport. The European Solidarity faction has significant representation in the district council, so today much depends on the position of your political force,” the appeal said.

Sadovyi stated that the airport is a strategic infrastructure of the state. After the war, Ukraine will need a strong international airport, a cargo hub, and the opportunity to develop the aviation infrastructure of the Lviv region.

“If today we give these lands for high-rise buildings, tomorrow we will not be able to return them. Therefore, I ask you to personally intervene in the situation and prevent a decision that could threaten the interests of the state and take away the opportunity for Lviv and the entire western Ukraine to develop our airport,” said the mayor of Lviv.
