Pope Leo XIV discussed the humanitarian situation in occupied Oleshki, Kherson region, during a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin. He called for a ceasefire to ensure the delivery of food and medicine, as well as the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population.

This was reported by the press service of the Holy See.

During the conversation, Pope Leo XIV expressed concern about the dire humanitarian situation in Oleshki, which is under Russian occupation.

The pontiff called for a ceasefire that would allow the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to local residents, including food and medicine.

Leo XIV also emphasized the need to ensure the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population from the city.

At the end of the conversation, the Pope reaffirmed the Holy See’s position on a peaceful settlement.

“The Holy See is committed to promoting dialogue and peace,” the Vatican press service said.

Recall that Pope Leo XIV called on the parties to the war in Ukraine to guarantee the safe transportation of grain across the Black Sea . He emphasized that the consequences of the war are felt even beyond the borders of Ukraine, especially in the poorest countries of the world.
