NATO is preparing a new support package for Ukraine. This week, new commitments from allies under the PURL program, an international initiative for centralized arms supplies to Kyiv, may be announced.
This was stated by US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, reports “European Truth”.
“Yes – and yes,” Whitaker answered a direct question from journalists about whether we should expect an update on commitments under PURL this week, and whether Southern European countries should be more actively involved in the program.
According to him, the program is stable and produces real results. Participation in PURL is not just support for Ukraine, but also strengthening the collective defense of the Alliance.
The PURL initiative was created to expedite the delivery of critical weapons to Ukraine through a centralized procurement model. According to Whitaker, its unique feature is that:
European countries and Canada order weapons directly from the United States;
after this, the weapons are transferred to the Ukrainian side;
The supply does not depend on political delays in the US or individual NATO countries.
Participation in the program has already been confirmed by:
Canada
Netherlands
Germany
Denmark, Norway and Sweden (in the format of a joint statement)
Whitaker also reported that several more countries have recently expressed their willingness to join, but they have not yet been named.
“If we want Ukraine to receive everything it needs for protection, the most effective way is to expand participation in PURL,” the ambassador emphasized.
Whitaker also noted that this program is a key tool for pressuring Russia. He urged allies not to delay and invest in shared security now.
As reported, the first aid package under the PURL initiative worth $2 billion has already reached the implementation stage.
