Explosion at train station and sabotage at substation: Germany shaken by new incidents

Two disturbing incidents occurred in Germany overnight: an unidentified object exploded at Augsburg’s main train station, injuring two people, and police suspected deliberate damage to equipment at a substation near Cologne.

In Augsburg, an explosion occurred in the passageway of one of the buildings on the territory of the main train station. After that, law enforcement officers found another suspicious object. The station was surrounded, train traffic was stopped, and bomb disposal experts were called in to work.
Meanwhile, in Bergheim, west of Cologne, a fault was detected at a substation. Initially, it was thought to be a short circuit, but police later said they were investigating the possibility of deliberate action.
No power outages occurred as a result of the incident. Investigators are also investigating whether the incident could be linked to a recent sabotage of energy infrastructure in Brandenburg. Experts were on site, looking for possible tools used by the attackers.
Both incidents occurred against the backdrop of warnings from German authorities about the threat of new hybrid attacks.
“We assume that Germany remains the main target for new, much more intense hybrid attacks from Russia,” said German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
As a reminder, several improvised explosive and incendiary devices were discovered in the federal state of Brandenburg, near the Jenschwalde coal-fired power plant. Law enforcement officers are investigating a possible attempt to damage energy infrastructure.
As reported,Germany officially declared Russia responsible for the attempted sabotage at Leipzig/Halle airport. In early August, a drone with explosives was found near a Ukrainian cargo plane.
It should be noted that Germany has announced tough measures in response to the Russian attack on planes at Leipzig airport. Berlin plans to close the Russian consulate in Bonn and the cultural center “Russian House” in Berlin.
