Explosions heard at ammunition factory in Bulgaria: details

Explosions have been heard at a munitions factory in central Bulgaria, after a truck caught fire in one of the company’s warehouses.

The incident occurred on the morning of Monday, August 10, at the EMCO Ltd. factory in the village of Belica, Tryavna Municipality. After a truck caught fire, ammunition on the premises of the company began to explode and a fire broke out.

Due to the emergency situation, the authorities activated the BG-ALERT alert system. Local residents were urged to follow the instructions of law enforcement officers and not approach the plant area.

Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said that the authorities decided to evacuate residents of neighboring settlements as a precautionary measure.

Law enforcement officers also blocked the road near the turnoff to the village of Armiankivtsi and set up a checkpoint there.

Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev said that the company’s employees are being taken out of the plant’s territory by buses.
