Explosives found near power plant in Germany: police investigate attack

Several improvised explosive and incendiary devices have been discovered near the Jenschwalde coal-fired power plant in the federal state of Brandenburg. Law enforcement is investigating a possible attempt to damage energy infrastructure.

This was reported by the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung on September 1, citing sources in law enforcement agencies and the energy company.

The devices were found near a substation after a report of possible property damage. They were defused by rescuers. Police have not yet confirmed reports in local media that missiles were used.

According to the power grid operator 50Hertz, unknown persons may have damaged several transmission lines. This caused a brief power outage, but all lines have since been restored. There was no large-scale power outage.

Law enforcement is investigating the possibility of a deliberate attack on an energy facility. The Brandenburg Criminal Police Office is investigating.

Brandenburg’s Infrastructure Minister Robert Krumbach called the damage to the energy facility an act of terrorism.

“The attack on the infrastructure in Jenschwalde is an attack on the security and livelihoods of the people of Brandenburg and other regions,” he said.

Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Jan Redmann and Minister of Economics and Energy Martina Klement also traveled to the region to assess the situation on the ground.

The Jenschwalde power plant has a capacity of around 1,500 MW and is the largest in Brandenburg. It supplies electricity to the grid and also provides heat for its own facilities and the cities of Cottbus and Peitz.
