A new automated entry/exit system (EES) will be operational at the external borders of the Schengen area from April 10. It will change the border control procedure for citizens of non-EU countries, including Ukrainians.

This was reported by the Diplomatic Service of the European Union.

This is a digital system that will record border crossings and collect biometric data from travelers. During your first trip, you will have to register: take a photo of your face and submit fingerprints (except for children under 12).

The data received will be stored in the system for three years, so the verification will be faster during subsequent trips.

The new rules apply to those travelling to Schengen countries for short stays of up to 90 days, including tourists and business travellers. However, they do not apply to EU citizens, people with residence permits or those under temporary protection.

The system will work in most Schengen countries, with the exception of Ireland and Cyprus, where the old control rules still apply.

It is important that biometric verification will become mandatory: without a photo or fingerprints, entry may be denied.
