Fake electricity bills: Ukrainians warned about a new scam scheme

Ukrainians have been warned about fraudulent messages disguised as electricity bills from the Ministry of Energy. Through such emails, attackers are trying to obtain users’ personal and banking details.

The State Special Communications Service was notified about this.

Fake messages can come via email or instant messaging. In them, scammers offer to allegedly pay for electricity, click on a link, or open an attached file.

The links may lead to fake websites where the user is asked to enter personal information or credit card details. The attachments may also contain malware.

In this case, attackers can gain access to accounts, bank accounts, or infect the device with malware.

The State Service for Special Communications emphasized that the Ministry of Energy does not issue electricity bills to consumers and does not collect utility payments .

Payments come only from the electricity supplier with which the consumer has a contract.

Ukrainians are advised not to click on suspicious links, open unknown attachments, or enter bank details on third-party sites. Payment information should only be checked through the official services of your provider.

If the data has already been compromised by fraudsters, you should contact the bank and the Cyber Police.

Recall that earlier, scammers began impersonating SBU employees . They sent people fake calls and demanded money, allegedly to avoid criminal liability.

Also , fraudulent messages with phishing links have been distributed on Facebook in the past. They were used to gain access to users’ pages and personal data.
