Famous Ukrainian cinematographer Pavlo Loiko died of hunger and cold

Ukrainian cinematographer Pavlo Loiko, who worked at the Dovzhenko Film Studio and participated in the filming of the film The Lost Diploma, died in Vorzel, Kyiv Region. He was 82 years old.

This was written by Svitlana Poklad, the wife of composer Igor Poklad.

She said that Pavlo Loiko and his wife lived as hermits in Vorzel and had suffered from a lack of food in recent weeks.

“A neighbor died at night… And now the worst thing. He died of hunger and cold… The family is him and his wife… No one else. Unfortunately, they were hermits… And they were 80+ years old. Only today the widow said that for two weeks they had been sitting on… water… because there was no money for food. Yesterday the husband’s heart stopped, he couldn’t stand it,” the woman wrote.

According to her, Pavlo Loiko was born in July 1943, graduated from VGIK and worked as a cinematographer for many years.

“A kind, decent, bright person who contributed to the development of Ukrainian cinema. He lived in Vorzel since the 90s. He died on February 4, 2026,” Poklad added.

After her husband’s death, his widow, Lydia, was left in a difficult financial situation. Later, Svitlana Poklad reported that Pavlo Loiko’s funeral would be paid for from the local budget, and social services would help his wife, who would maintain contact with neighbors.

The Kyiv Regional State Administration later denied that Loiko’s death was due to cold and hunger.

“His death was not related to hypothermia or lack of food. An autopsy was performed on February 5. According to the medical certificate of death, the cause of death is “chronic ischemic heart disease,” the post says.

In addition, they noted that there were also no signs of hypothermia.

The administration stated that the house where the man lived was warm, with stove heating and gas. The electricity was provided according to hourly schedules of outages, and the pension was transferred to the bank account on time every month.
