FIBA lifts restrictions on Russian and Belarusian basketball players: national teams suspended for now

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has lifted restrictions on Russian and Belarusian players, coaches, referees, commissioners and other officials. They can now participate in competitions under the organization’s auspices .

The corresponding decision was made by the FIBA Executive Committee.

The organization explained that it complies with the decisions of the International Olympic Committee of May 7 and July 7, 2026.

Restrictions have been lifted in both basketball and 3×3 basketball. Russian and Belarusian athletes can compete in FIBA tournaments, and officials can be appointed to compete. The decision came into effect immediately.

“Russian and Belarusian players may participate in all FIBA competitions, and officials may be appointed to participate in them, effective immediately,” the statement said.

At the same time, the national teams of Russia and Belarus are not yet allowed to participate in international competitions. FIBA plans to consider the issue of their return at a meeting of the Central Council in December 2026.

In particular, the Russian and Belarusian national teams remain suspended from international competitions following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

It was previously reported thatthe International Olympic Committee (IOC) temporarily renewed the membership of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), which was suspended on October 12, 2023.
