Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico said his country would ask for a postponement of the vote on a new package of European Union sanctions against Russia until the gas supply issue is resolved.

He announced this during a press conference.

Fico noted that he had instructed Foreign Minister Jurij Blanar at a ministerial meeting on June 18 not to support the sanctions package until the energy supply issue had been discussed.

“We want this issue to be discussed first, not sanctions,” Fico said, adding: “Slovakia has no reason to suffer because of Ukraine.”

Slovakia has previously threatened to block new European Union sanctions against Russia if they threaten a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.

Let us recall that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the European Union would stop funding Slovakia if it continued to deviate from the bloc’s general course.
