Intense fighting broke out on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border late Saturday night after Kabul accused Islamabad of carrying out airstrikes on the Afghan capital.

This is reported by Mathrubhumi .

According to a statement by the Afghan military, “in response to airstrikes by Pakistani forces,” Taliban border units in the east of the country “engaged in fierce fighting against Pakistani military positions in various border areas.”

According to reports, the 201st Khalid ibn al-Walid Corps of the Afghan Army carried out attacks on Pakistani military posts near the Durand Line, particularly in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces.

The situation remains tense, with clashes continuing in several border regions, including Kunar, Dangam, Birkot, and Paktia.

The Afghan side confirmed the exchange of fire, while official Islamabad has not yet issued a statement. The incident occurred after reports of a Pakistani airstrike on Kabul, which Pakistani authorities deny.

The Taliban, in turn, mobilized armed personnel in response to the escalation, which could indicate a further escalation of tensions between the countries.

The developments came a day after Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif told parliament that Islamabad would show “no leniency” in response to the attacks, and stressed that Pakistan would target “those places from which our forces are being fired upon.” He also called on the Taliban administration to prevent Afghan territory from being used for attacks on Pakistan.

The latest clashes are further deepening tensions caused by a surge in terrorist activity in Pakistan in recent years. Most of these attacks are attributed to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which, while distinct from the Afghan Taliban, is closely linked to it. Relations between the two countries have remained tense since the Taliban took power in Kabul in 2021.

Recall that in May , the Indian Armed Forces launched strikes on Pakistani infrastructure and on Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan launched a retaliatory attack . As a result of the military operation, at least 26 civilians have been killed so far, and another 46 have been injured.

Subsequently, United States President Donald Trump announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to a complete and immediate ceasefire.

By the way, during the latest escalation of the conflict with India , the Pakistani Armed Forces suffered significant losses – 11 soldiers were killed and another 78 were injured.
