The film “2000 Meters to Andreyevka” by director Mstislav Chernov will represent Ukraine in the category “Best International Feature Film” at the 98th Academy Awards.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Oscar Committee.

“This is an uncompromisingly honest and poignant documentary that immerses us in the reality of the Russian-Ukrainian war through human experience – fragile, exhausting and at the same time full of dignity. This Ukrainian film should become even more visible in the world, because it speaks on behalf of those who daily defend freedom and the right to life,” he said.

What is the film about?

The film “2000 Masters to Andreevka” shows the consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian war from a personal and painful perspective. After his historical chronicle of civilian losses in Mariupol, Mstislav Chernov turned the lens on the Ukrainian military – who they are, where they come from and the incredibly difficult decisions they have to make in the trenches, fighting for every piece of their native land.
lands.

Against the backdrop of the failed counteroffensive of 2023, Chernov and AP colleague Alexei Babenko accompanied a Ukrainian brigade as it fought its way through some 2,000 meters of heavily fortified forest on a mission to liberate the Russian-held village of Andreyevka. Combining original footage, intense bodycam footage from Ukrainian fighters, and powerful moments of personal reflection, 2,000 Masters to Andreyevka reveals with eerie intimacy that the further the troops advance through their devastated homeland, the more they realize that for them, this war may never end.

The world premiere of the film “2000 meters to Andreevka” took place at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025, where the film won the award for best director in the World Cinema Documentary category. The Ukrainian premiere took place at the Docudays UA festival, where the film won in three categories at once. Since August 28, the film has been in wide release in Ukraine.
