The US Senate has approved a $9 billion budget cut to federal programs supporting foreign countries and public broadcasting.
This is reported by The Hill.
After more than 12 hours of discussions, the document was adopted by a vote of 51 to 48 around 2 a.m. Thursday.
The law provides for a reduction of almost $8 billion in funding for international initiatives, including development programs, economic assistance, USAID’s global health projects, and assistance to refugees and victims of international crises.
In addition, funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting will be reduced by more than $1 billion.
According to the publication, this decision is considered a political victory for President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly emphasized the need to reduce federal government spending. However, the real effect is limited – the budget reduction is only 0.1% of total spending.
The bill will now be sent to the House of Representatives for consideration.
As a reminder, the administration of US President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of more than 90% of grants allocated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of foreign aid.
As a result, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) office in Ukraine was ordered to halt all projects and spending on them . This came after the U.S. State Department ordered a 90-day suspension of aid programs to other countries for an audit.
