Finland closes part of air and sea space due to risk of drones

The Finnish Armed Forces have temporarily restricted the use of air and sea space near the cities of Kotka and Hamina in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland. Such measures are related to the risk of drones that Ukraine launches against military facilities in Russia entering the country’s territory.

According to the publication, airspace restrictions came into effect after 08:00, and part of the sea area was later closed. The restricted zone covers the area from the Kaunissaari district to the port of Gamina.

The Finnish General Staff explained that these measures are precautionary in nature and are necessary so that, if necessary, the military can safely neutralize drones that may accidentally fly into Finnish air or sea space.

This is not the first time Finnish authorities have introduced such restrictions. They were last introduced on July 17, also due to the risks associated with Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory.

It was previously reported that on July 6, the Finnish Armed Forces also temporarily restricted air traffic over the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland due to similar security risks .
