Finland will provide Ukrzaliznytsia with 10 Dv12 series diesel locomotives and their components free of charge. This is the first time that the country has provided locomotives to a Ukrainian railway carrier free of charge to replenish its rolling stock.

This was reported by Ukrzaliznytsia.

The agreement on the transfer of equipment was signed by Prime Ministers of Ukraine Serhiy Koretsky and Finland Petteri Orpo with the participation of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

The agreement was the result of an initiative to create an international coalition to help Ukraine replenish its locomotive fleet with used equipment from partner countries. Work on this mechanism was launched during the Carpathian Eight summit.

Russian attacks damaged nearly 600 locomotives

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian troops have damaged or destroyed nearly 600 Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives. Over 300 of them are diesel locomotives.

The company emphasizes that restoring damaged equipment requires significant financial costs and time. Some locomotives cannot be repaired after the attacks, so the railway needs to promptly replenish its rolling stock.

Diesel locomotives are particularly important because they can operate without overhead power, allowing rail services to continue even when Russian strikes disrupt energy infrastructure.

The transfer of Finnish equipment should help Ukrzaliznytsia maintain passenger and cargo transportation in the face of constant attacks on Ukraine’s transport and energy infrastructure.

It was previously reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo agreed to raise additional funds for the construction of shelters in Ukraine within the framework of an intergovernmental agreement.
