Fires, evacuations and work bans: abnormal heatwave rages across Europe

Europe has been hit by an abnormal heat wave with temperatures reaching +42°C. Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece have already faced the consequences.

This was reported in The Guardian.

It is noted that this is the first powerful summer anticyclone in the summer of 2025. It has already covered the Iberian Peninsula, the Mediterranean and surrounding regions. A period of incredible heat is expected there.

Heat in the Iberian Peninsula

Spain has declared a “red” level of danger due to expected temperatures of up to 42 °C in the southern regions of the country.

In Portugal, two-thirds of the country will be on high alert due to extreme heat and the risk of forest fires. The capital is also expected to see temperatures of up to 42°C, while peatlands and scrubland have caught fire in the forested border areas due to the heat.

France and Italy

In France, the heat has already reached the south of the country.

In Marseille, temperatures reached almost 40°C. Public swimming pools there were made free so that residents could cool off.

Fires also broke out in southwestern France, where temperatures reached 40°C, forcing firefighters to evacuate campsites and a historic abbey.

In Italy, temperatures are expected to reach 39 °C. In some places, authorities have banned outdoor work from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and unions are demanding that this decision be extended to the entire country.

Heat in Greece

A massive forest fire has broken out near Athens amid scorching heat, forcing the evacuation of several villages and the closure of a coastal road.

It was previously reported that Ukraine will experience “hellish” heat in early July, in particular, weather forecasters predict that the air temperature may rise to +39°C .
