Five billion dead, snow for decades and a world without the sun: scientists have named the consequences of the start of a nuclear war

In the event of a global nuclear conflict, life on Earth could be on the verge of extinction. Explosions, radiation, nuclear winter — all this can destroy not only cities, but also the global ecosystem. But, as the famous American investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen claims, there is a place where humanity can still survive — it is Australia and New Zealand.
This is reported by the Daily Mail .
Jacobsen explained that it is these two countries in the Southern Hemisphere that have a chance to preserve agriculture and life after a nuclear apocalypse, which, according to her predictions, will destroy almost all life in the Northern Hemisphere.
In the event of a nuclear war:
- The temperature on Earth could drop by 20-30°C , particularly in the US and Ukraine, due to massive amounts of smoke and soot in the atmosphere, which will block sunlight.
- A nuclear winter will come on the planet , as a result of which crop yields will become impossible, and therefore, global famine will occur.
- About 5 billion people could die from hunger , according to research by Professor Owen Tun, published in Nature Food.
“Places like Iowa or Ukraine will simply turn into snowy wastelands for ten years. When agriculture dies, civilization dies,” Jacobsen emphasized.
Added to this is radiation damage : due to the destruction of the ozone layer , being in the sun will become deadly dangerous , and people will be forced to live underground.
According to the expert , Australia and New Zealand are humanity’s last chance , as they are far from nuclear powers (the USA, Russia, China) and are therefore unlikely to become targets. Also, winds and ocean currents there will carry radioactive dust in the opposite direction.
It is noted that the island location provides natural isolation from disasters, and after the nuclear strikes are over, they will be able to resume agricultural production.
We will remind you that the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reported on the resumption of the arms race between nuclear powers.
It was previously reported that in a possible nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India , 125 million people could die in just a few hours , and billions would starve.
