Floods after the thaw: which areas are at risk?
In Ukraine, from February 23 to 26, water levels in rivers are expected to rise due to sharp warming and active snow melting. Local flooding is possible in several regions.
This was reported by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
Ilya Perevozchykov, a specialist in the hydrological forecast department of the Ukrhydrometeorological Center, noted that this year conditions have been created for pronounced spring flooding, which has not been observed in the last ten years.
According to him, the greatest rise in water is predicted in the Southern Bug basin, as well as on the Ingul River and its tributaries. In Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Odessa, and Mykolaiv regions, the water level may rise by 0.2-0.7 meters. A yellow danger level has been declared there.
The most difficult situation is expected in Kropyvnytskyi, where partial flooding of residential buildings on coastal streets is possible. An orange level of danger has been declared in the city.
Water levels are also forecast to rise in the Zhytomyr, Kyiv, and Cherkasy regions on the rivers of the Middle Dnieper subbasin. On the Stugna River near the Zdorivka hydrostation, water may overflow into the floodplain and flood low-lying areas.
Due to the intensive melting of snow, experts also predict the accumulation of water in lowlands and the formation of local runoff.
