In the first half of 2025, 86,795 births and 249,002 deaths were recorded in Ukraine. Thus, for every newborn, there are three deaths.
This was reported by Opendatabot, citing data from the Ministry of Justice.
The birth rate during the full-scale war was almost unchanged compared to the same period last year, when 87,655 children were born. However, the overall demographic trend remains alarming.
Over the past 10 years, the birth rate has decreased by 2.2 times. While in 2016 about 32 thousand babies were born each month, now there are only 14 thousand.
The largest number of children is born in Kyiv — 9,947 babies, which is 12% of the total. Next are Lviv region with 8,282 newborns (10%) and Dnipropetrovsk region — 6,670 (8%).
Despite the war, seven regions of Ukraine have seen a slight increase in birth rates. Kyiv region shows a 6% increase, Volyn region also 6%, Lviv region 5%.
However, in regions close to the fighting, the situation is the opposite. In the Donetsk region, a drop in birth rates of almost 47% was recorded, in the Kherson region – by 11%, and in the Chernihiv region – by 10%.
There are slightly more boys born — 51% of the total number of babies.
Over 249,000 people died in Ukraine in the first six months of 2025. This figure has consistently outpaced the birth rate by at least three times over the past five years. For comparison, in 2016, there were two deaths for every newborn.
The highest mortality rate was recorded in Dnipropetrovsk region — 27,120 cases. It is followed by Kyiv (18,114) and Kharkiv region (17,694).
Recall that due to low birth rates, war, and emigration, the population of Ukraine is rapidly decreasing , and the future does not promise anything good.
As reported, population decline, low birth rates, premature mortality, aging of the nation, disease, external and internal migration, deportation – all these are factors that caused the deepening of the demographic crisis in Ukraine with the beginning of the full-scale war . In particular, the war led to a sharp reduction in the number of young people.
