The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to physicist Francis Galzen. He was recognized for his key contributions to the creation of the IceCube neutrino observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

This was announced by the Nobel Committee.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the prize to Halsen “for his decisive contributions to the IceCube neutrino observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.”

IceCube is a neutrino observatory located at the South Pole. Its detectors are embedded deep in the Antarctic ice and allow them to detect extremely rare neutrinos arriving from space.

Galzen is one of the key scientists on the IceCube project and its principal investigator. He is a professor of physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos has given scientists a new way to study the most powerful and distant processes in the Universe. Neutrinos interact almost invisibly with matter, so they can travel enormous distances and carry information about their cosmic sources.

The Nobel Prize in Physics became the second award of Nobel Week 2026. The winners of the Prize in Physiology or Medicine were announced the day before.

The size of this year’s Nobel Prize is 12 million Swedish kronor .
