In Russia, a special commission has previously deemed it inexpedient to repair and modernize the nuclear-powered missile cruiser Peter the Great, which is the flagship of the Northern Fleet. The ship is planned to be decommissioned and sent for scrap metal due to the exhaustion of its operational life.
This is reported by Russian media.
Initially, the modernization of the “Peter the Great” was planned to begin after the completion of work on the nuclear cruiser “Admiral Nakhimov”. However, the modernization of the latter dragged on for 8 years longer than planned.
During this time, the operational life of the Peter the Great was completely exhausted, so repairs and further modernization of the ship were deemed inexpedient.
“Peter the Great” remained the only nuclear-powered ship of the “Orlan” project still in service. The other ships of this project have already been decommissioned.
The modernization of the Admiral Nakhimov lasted about 28 years and was completed in the summer. It is planned to be transferred to the combat composition of the Northern Fleet by the end of the year.
After that, the Admiral Nakhimov should become the most powerful surface ship in the Russian fleet. It is expected to be armed with Fort-M and Pantsir-M anti-aircraft systems, Paket-NK and Otvet anti-submarine systems, as well as launchers for 80 Kalibr, Onyx and Zircon missiles.
