A major breakthrough in the treatment of type 1 diabetes has been announced: a new therapy called VX-880 allows the body to produce its own insulin again. Early clinical trial results indicate that the method is effective in most patients.

This is reported by National Geographic .

Scientists have announced the most significant advance in the treatment of type 1 diabetes in a century. A new therapy called VX-880 has shown that the body can restore its ability to produce insulin without daily injections.

The VX-880 method is currently being tested in clinical trials. Patients are injected with specially engineered cells that can develop into insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Treatment also involves taking immunosuppressants.

According to the study, the first patients who participated in the program have not required additional insulin injections for more than two years. Out of a total of 14 participants, 10 people showed a positive result.

The publication notes that the researchers plan to continue the study to test the safety and effectiveness of the therapy in a wider group of patients. For now, the method is only used in those who cannot control their sugar levels with traditional methods.

“The new approach restores the very source of insulin production – beta cells,” the scientists noted.

The article recalls that until 1921, type 1 diabetes was a fatal disease. The discovery of insulin by Frederick Banting and Charles Best made treatment possible, but the constant dependence on injections remained. VX-880 therapy could change the approach to treating the disease in the future.

Scientists emphasize that the method is the result of many years of stem cell research and the personal motivation of researchers whose loved ones have experienced diabetes.

Recall that researchers from the Institute for Bioelectronic Medicine in New York have created an innovative technology that uses sound waves to treat inflammation, diabetes, and obesity without surgery.
