For the first time in German history, an AfD representative leads a state parliament.

For the first time in Germany, a representative of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has become the head of a state parliament. Thirty-five-year-old Tobias Rausch was elected president of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament.

During the secret ballot, Rausch received 48 votes . 29 deputies voted against his candidacy, and another 5 abstained .

The AfD and the Sahra Wagenknecht Union (BSW) party together hold 44 seats in the Saxony-Anhalt parliament. The BSW announced its support for Rausch in advance, so he received at least four votes from representatives of other factions.

Rausch became the first AfD politician to lead the German parliament. Previously, he served as the party’s state branch general secretary and parliamentary director.

After his election, the politician stated that he intended to be president of the entire state parliament and not use his new position to settle political scores.

In the elections in Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD won first place and 39 seats in the state parliament. “Direct” previously reported the party’s victory in the state elections .

The AfD also confirmed talks with Russia’s Gazprom on the possible resumption of gas supplies to Germany .
