Former US Army Major Nidal Hassan, who was sentenced to death for the 2009 killing of 13 people at Fort Hood military base in Texas, is scheduled to be executed on December 3. The Pentagon has confirmed that the execution will be broadcast live on the Internet.
Reuters reports this .
The plan to execute Hassan was announced by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on October 8 in an interview with the conservative television channel Real America’s Voice. He gave it aboard the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln . According to the minister, a firing squad of military personnel will carry out the sentence on December 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Hood.
Hegset said Americans need to see the execution to understand the consequences of such crimes. He also announced a planned live broadcast on the social media platform X. A Pentagon official confirmed to Reuters on condition of anonymity that the execution would be broadcast live.
According to the agency, the broadcast of the execution will be an unprecedented event for the United States. Previously, American media outlets have appealed to courts to allow them to broadcast the execution of death sentences, but have been refused. Experts interviewed by Reuters journalists also could not name a single country where executions by court verdicts would be shown live.
Hassan will be the first American service member to be executed since 1961. The last time the US military carried out a death sentence by firing squad was in 1945. Typically, military personnel sentenced to death are executed by lethal injection in US disciplinary barracks .
In August 2013 , a military jury found Hassan guilty of 45 counts of premeditated murder and attempted premeditated murder and sentenced him to death . He conducted his own defense during the trial , although he was able to be assisted by two lawyers from the Army’s Legal Defense Service.
