Global oil prices have topped $100 a barrel for the first time since 2022 as tensions in the Middle East escalate, with investors weighing the risks of prolonged energy supply disruptions.
This is reported by CNN .
Journalists note that on Sunday, US oil futures rose by almost 14.7%. At the same time, the benchmark Brent brand rose by more than 12% and reached about $104 per barrel.
Investors are weighing the risks of possible long-term disruptions in energy supplies from the Middle East. The main concerns are related to the escalation of the conflict in Iran and the potential threat to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Against this backdrop, US stock indexes opened lower on fears of a new wave of inflation. Dow Jones futures fell more than 850 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq lost about 1.7%.
According to the American Automobile Association, the average price of gasoline in the United States increased by about 16% in a week and reached $3.45 per gallon.
Against this background, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that Washington may review some of the sanctions on Russian oil in order to increase supply on the global market.
“There are hundreds and millions of barrels of sanctioned crude oil in the water,” said Scott Bessant.
By the way, on Monday, March 2, global oil prices rose sharply amid the escalation of the conflict over Iran and risks to supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. The cost of the benchmark Brent grade reached its highest level since January 2025, showing the largest increase in 4 years.
