The Verkhovna Rada adopted amendments to legislation that simplify the procedure for obtaining citizenship for foreigners fighting for Ukraine

This was reported to hromadske by the acting head of the department for coordination of military service of foreigners in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Konstantin Milevskiy.

A new law on multiple citizenship, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, shortens the period of mandatory military service for foreign volunteers seeking to become citizens of Ukraine.

Now foreigners who have signed a contract with the Ukrainian Defense Forces only need one year of service instead of three, as was previously assumed. The law will come into force six months after its adoption.

According to Milevskiy, the changes are primarily aimed at helping citizens of Belarus and Russia who, after joining the ranks of the Ukrainian army, face legal difficulties, in particular due to the loss of documents and problems with legalization in Ukraine.

At the same time, even a simplified procedure does not cancel out a thorough identity check and the final decision of the President of Ukraine on granting citizenship.

Milevsky also noted that the loss of a passport often deprives volunteers of the opportunity to go through the legal procedure of acquiring citizenship, so this issue requires regulation at the state level .

Let us recall that 21-year-old Hungarian volunteer Asher Benjamin died in the war against Russia.

As reported, another Georgian fighter, Kakha Tilidze, who fought on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, died in the war in Ukraine .
