Forest fires in Europe: France and Spain prepare financial aid for affected regions

France and Spain have begun preparing financial support programs for regions affected by large-scale forest fires that have been raging for more than a week. Although the fires have not yet been completely contained, the governments of both countries are already working on relief mechanisms.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the government would declare the worst-hit areas “emergency zones,” allowing for rapid financial assistance to be directed to the regions’ recovery.

In France, Economy and Finance Minister Roland Lescure said that insurance companies will cover the costs of temporarily relocating more than 200,000 people who were evacuated due to fires, even if their homes were not damaged.

French President Emmanuel Macron, during a meeting with rescuers and local authorities in the southwest of the country, assured that the state would provide the necessary support to affected residents and the tourism business, which suffered losses at the height of the season.

Meanwhile, fires in France and Spain remain out of control. According to local authorities, the flames have not spread near Bordeaux and in areas south and west of Madrid in the past 24 hours, but the threat remains.

Forecasters and officials have warned that a new heat wave expected in the coming days could make fighting the fires much more difficult. Macron called the current blazes unprecedented and stressed that the forest fire season is far from over.
