Former Defense Ministry official suspected of embezzling over a billion hryvnias on food for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Military counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine have exposed a large-scale embezzlement of over UAH 1 billion allocated for the purchase of food products for the Armed Forces during March-December 2022.
This was reported by the press service of the SBU.
According to the investigation, the scheme involves a former head of one of the departments of the Ministry of Defense. While in office in the spring of 2022, he signed a contract with a private company to supply wholesale batches of products for the army. At the same time, the cost of the goods was artificially inflated by 41%, and the logistics – by as much as 221%.
“The Defense Ministry official did not check the validity of the proposed amounts and did not agree on the contract with the relevant departments of the department. This led to multi-million-dollar losses to the state budget,” the SBU noted.
A forensic economic examination initiated by law enforcement officers confirmed the fact of embezzlement of defense funds in particularly large amounts.
The former official has already been notified of suspicion under Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – “Embezzlement or appropriation of property through abuse of official position.” The sanction of the article provides for up to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The issue of choosing a preventive measure for him is currently being decided.
As a reminder, the military counterintelligence of the SBU, together with the Bureau of Economic Security of Ukraine , exposed an official of one of the combat brigades of the Armed Forces, who, according to the investigation, is involved in the embezzlement of funds intended for the purchase of combat drones.
As reported, the Security Service of Ukraine exposed and detained an instructor major of one of the air brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who turned out to be an agent of Russian intelligence . The suspect was preparing strikes on Ukrainian airfields where F-16, Mirage 2000 and Su-24 aircraft are based.
