Former head of Energoatom detained in Kyiv for embezzling over 18 million hryvnias
In Kyiv, law enforcement officers detained Yuriy Sheyk, former acting first vice president of Energoatom and former first deputy minister of energy of Ukraine.
This was announced by Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.
As reported by RBC-Ukraine and Babel sources, the official is suspected of embezzling 18.6 million hryvnias during the conclusion of a contract for compulsory civil liability insurance for nuclear damage – a document that directly affects Ukraine’s nuclear safety.
According to the investigation, on August 1, 2022, Sheiko signed a contract with the insurance company PJSC “Prosto-Insurance” for UAH 105.642 million. Already on August 12, he increased the amount to UAH 130.925 million without economic justification, referring to the alleged demands of the German reinsurer “Yasp”. Checks, audits and forensic economic expertise confirmed the artificial overestimation of the cost of services. The overpayment amounted to UAH 18.6 million, which, according to the investigation, were withdrawn from the strategic state enterprise.
The investigation also established that the main owner of “Prosto-Insurance” is the Cypriot company LAVIDIA LIMITED, which is connected through a chain of affiliated companies to the Russian holding “RESO”, the ultimate beneficiaries of which are citizens of the Russian Federation. Among the shareholders of PJSC “Life and Pension” is also a Russian citizen – the president of the holding “RESO”.
Yuriy Sheyk is being charged under Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — misappropriation of property in particularly large amounts by prior conspiracy of a group of persons.
We will remind, against the backdrop of the exposure of the corruption scheme at Energoatom, Prime Minister Yulia Svirydenko announced an audit of all state-owned companies.
As reported, NABU has stopped disclosing new information in the case of corruption in the energy sector due to restrictions due to martial law.
