Former Ukrainian national team player Andrei Polunin died suddenly in Lutsk.

Renowned Ukrainian footballer and former member of the Ukrainian national team, Andriy Polunin, has died at the age of 54. This was announced on the official website of the Metalist 1925 football club, where he served as chief scout.

The tragedy occurred in Lutsk after a veterans’ match in which Polunin was participating. According to preliminary reports, he suffered sudden cardiac arrest.

Andriy Polunin was one of the most prominent Ukrainian midfielders of the 1990s and early 2000s. He played for Dnipro, Kryvbas, Karpaty, and CSKA Kyiv.

Later, the footballer continued his career in Germany, where he played for Nuremberg, St. Pauli and Rot-Weiss.

Polunin played nine matches for the Ukrainian national team and scored one goal against Italy during the Euro 1996 qualifiers.

In total, he played 316 official matches during his professional career, scoring 39 goals and making 45 assists.

After finishing his career, Polunin remained in football and worked in various positions at Kryvbas, Neftyanik, Arsenal and Dnipro-1.
Since January 1, 2025, he held the position of chief scout of Kharkiv “Metalist 1925”.
