France has successfully tested the latest Aster 30 B1NT anti-aircraft missile, capable of intercepting even hypersonic missiles at a distance of up to 150 km. In the future, these missiles will become part of the SAMP/T NG complex – such systems are critically needed by Ukraine to protect against Russian “Daggers” and “Zircons”.
This is reported by Naval News .
Important tests of the new Aster 30 B1NT anti-aircraft missile, developed as part of the joint initiative of France, Italy and the United Kingdom, FSAF-PAAMS, took place at the DGA Essais de Missiles range in southwestern France. Representatives from all three countries took part in the event, underlining the strategic importance of this development for the defense of Europe.
The Aster 30 B1NT missile is capable of destroying targets at a distance of up to 150 km, including supersonic and hypersonic missiles. Although the detailed characteristics of the new missile remain classified, it is known that it will become a component of the future SAMP/T NG air defense system. Such systems are also planned to be installed on ships of the French and Italian navies.
These are the second official tests of the Aster 30 B1NT — the first took place back in October 2024. MBDA, which produces these missiles, has increased production rates 5 times due to high demand and limited supplies on the market.
Recall that Ukraine already has two SAMP/T air defense system batteries, and another one is expected in October 2025. If in the future it is possible to obtain a modernized version of SAMP/T NG with new missiles, this will allow Ukrainian forces to effectively counter the threat of hypersonic strikes, in particular from Russian missiles 3M22 “Tsirkon” and Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal”.
In particular, the “Dagger” has already been repeatedly intercepted by Patriot systems, but the presence of another modern air defense system with the function of combating hypersonics would significantly strengthen Ukraine’s shield. Therefore, successful tests in France are not just a technological breakthrough, but a potential chance for Ukraine to strengthen its air defense in the fight against Russian aggression.
It is worth adding that Ukraine is getting closer to receiving the latest air defense systems capable of destroying even complex types of threats, such as guided bombs. The stage of large-scale tests conducted with the participation of NATO, France and the Ukrainian side has been completed at the training ground in France.
By the way, in mid-May 2025, a successful test of a ballistic missile for the Armed Forces of Ukraine took place – it covered almost 300 kilometers and destroyed a Russian command post. After successful use, the missile is planned to be launched into series production.
