Three European countries — France, Spain, and Belgium — spent more on liquefied natural gas from Russia than on financial aid to Ukraine.
Thiswas reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to a Greenpeace report.
Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, countries have spent €34.3 billion on Russian LNG. At the same time, their financial support amounted to €21.2 billion.
According to the report, the European Union purchased 12.8 billion cubic meters of liquefied gas from Russia in the first half of 2025. Compared to the same period in 2021, imports increased by 67%.
Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian pipeline and liquefied natural gas covered 45% of Europe’s energy needs. However, after 2022, the EU began to reduce its dependence on Russia.
As a reminder, the European Union seeks to abandon the purchase of Russian liquefied natural gas earlier than planned within the framework of the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.
Trump previously stated that he was ready to impose “serious sanctions” against Russia , but would do so only if NATO member countries refused to buy Russian raw materials.
