German elections: Merz’s CDU shows worst result in history

According to preliminary official results, the Christian Democratic Union of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is gaining only 4.9% in the state elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The party does not overcome the required five percent threshold and will not be represented in the state parliament for the first time.

According to the publication, this result was the worst for the CDU in the entire post-war history of Germany. Since 1946, the party has never been left out of the state parliament following the results of elections.
In the previous elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2021, the CDU received 13.3% of the vote .
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) came in first place in the September 20 election, with about 38.2% of the vote . In second place was the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) of the state’s current premier, Manuela Schwesig, with 35.5% .
AfD co-chair Tino Hrupalla called on Friedrich Merz to resign after the first results were announced. This is a political demand by the AfD, not a legal consequence of the regional elections.
Merz himself called the CDU’s result in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern a “disaster,” but said he intended to continue as chancellor and implement reforms.
As a reminder, the day before, “Pryamy” reported on the AfD’s victory in the regional elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . According to the first exit polls, the party received 37%, the SPD – 35.5%, and the CDU – 5.5%.
The AfD previously won the elections in Saxony-Anhalt , receiving 44% of the vote. The CDU also suffered significant losses then.
