The German government is preparing a reform of social assistance for Ukrainian refugees: those who arrived after April 1, 2025, will no longer receive Bürgergeld, but will switch to payments under the Asylum Seeker Benefits Act (Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz).

This was stated by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, DW reports.

According to Dobrindt, the new rules have already been agreed between the ministries of labor and interior, and the government is expected to adopt them this week. The changes are expected to be retroactive, starting from April 1, 2025.

In addition, it is planned to introduce obligations: newly arrived Ukrainians must actively look for work, and in case of refusal – possible reductions in social benefits. There is also an asset test: those with significant savings or property must use them before receiving assistance.

Current payments for single people under the Bürgergeld system are around €563 per month. Under the new law, these will be reduced to around €441 for asylum seekers – this amounts to €196 for personal needs and €245 for living expenses (food, clothing, etc.).

Recall that Germany will reduce the amount of cash assistance for Ukrainian refugees who arrived in the country after April 1, 2025.
