German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Berlin cannot agree to US President Donald Trump’s initiative to create a “peace council” in its current format.
Reuters reports this.
During a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, Merz explained that the proposed governance structure of the council contradicts German constitutional norms.
At the same time, the Chancellor emphasized that Berlin remains open to cooperation with the United States in other formats if they contribute to achieving peace.
According to Merz, new formats of interaction do not necessarily have to concern only the situation in Gaza or the Middle East. They can also be used to find solutions to the war in Ukraine and other international crises.
It was previously reported that Russia responded positively to US President Donald Trump’s initiative to create the so-called Peace Council.
