Germany has called for the development of an alternative to the American Tomahawk missiles together with Ukraine after the US refused to deploy such systems on German territory.
Deutsche Welle reports this, citing Roderich Kiesewetter, a security expert for the governing Christian Democratic Union party.
He called US President Donald Trump’s decision a “huge mistake” and stressed that it weakens Russia’s deterrence and directly affects Europe’s security.
According to Kiesewetter, Europe must urgently develop its own long-range systems with Ukraine to obtain a fully fledged alternative to American missiles by 2030.
He emphasized that the absence of American medium-range missiles in Germany is a more serious challenge than even the reduction of the US military contingent in Europe.
In his opinion, such a Washington policy actually plays into the Kremlin’s favor, as it sends a dangerous signal to Vladimir Putin against the backdrop of the constant nuclear threat from the Russian Federation.
Kiesewetter also recalled that Russia violated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 2017, so there is no point in counting on agreements with Moscow.
Security analyst Nico Lange supported the need to create European long-range weapons independent of the US. He noted that since 2018, Russia has deployed Iskander systems in the Kaliningrad region, which pose a constant threat to Europe.
According to him, without American missiles in Germany, Europe risks a serious gap in defense and becoming vulnerable to blackmail from Russia.
As previously reported, European politicians and defense officials fear that Russia may use the next 1-2 years to escalate the conflict outside Ukraine.
Recall that the Kremlin is actively forming the psychological and informational basis for a possible future war against NATO. At the same time, Russia is creating a network of “Trojan horses,” buying up real estate near military bases of NATO countries, to launch a coordinated sabotage campaign. The Kremlin has also intensified its propaganda campaign regarding the creation of the “Narva People’s Republic,” which may indicate that the Kremlin is preparing to attack Estonia.
